VFW announces weekly meal, events
The VFW Kona Post, located behind Kona Locksmith on Kaiwi Street, will host its Friday meal from 5 to 7 p.m. The dinner will feature a penne pasta with meat balls, salad, garlic bread and dessert for $10. Checks are accepted. Preorders are appreciated by calling 769-8643. Meals can be eaten at the VFW or taken out.
At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, the VFW Auxiliary will hold its monthly meeting. The Marine Corps League’s monthly meeting Saturday will be held via Zoom.
Taco Tuesday featuring ground beef or shrimp, rice and beans for $7 will be hosted from 4 to 7 p.m.
From noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, the VFW hosts a potluck with the bar open for service.

Tuition stipends for aspiring teachers available
Scholarship tuition stipends for qualified future teachers are available as part of the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s College of Education (COE) Grow Our Own Teachers Initiative in partnership with the state Department of Education (DOE).
Applicants who have been admitted into the Master of Education in Teaching Secondary or Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Teacher Education (PBCTE) Elementary program for fall 2020 or who have applied to the PBCTE Secondary program for spring 2021 are eligible.
Designed for DOE employees who serve as emergency hires, substitute teachers or educational assistants, the initiative directly addresses teacher shortage areas in Hawaiian language, world languages, English, mathematics and science.
The new cohort of Grow Our Own candidates begins in January 2021 and is expected to graduate in May 2022. Upon completion of the program, participants are eligible to apply for teacher licensure from the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board and are required to commit to three years of full-time teaching in HIDOE or state charter schools in their licensed field.
Applications for the Grow Our Own initiative are due by Sept. 1 for priority admission and Oct. 1 for final consideration.

Zonta Club awards scholarships
The Zonta Club of Hilo recently announced $10,000 in scholarships and awards given in memory of former Zontian Patricia O’Toole, whose estate donated $5,000.
The Young Woman in Public Affairs Award recognizes young women, ages 16-19, for demonstrating leadership skills and commitment to public service and civic causes, and encourages them to continue their participation in public and political life. The 2020 recipients are Hilo High School students Jennifer Kamimura, who received a $2,000 award; Chalsea Castillo, who received a $1,000 award; and Jade Rivera, who received a $500 award.
The Nursing Scholarship is open to women enrolled in a nursing degree program at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo or Hawaii Community College. The 2020 recipients are UH-Hilo students Lexie Taylor, who received a $2,500 scholarship, and Angelina Gallegos, who received a $1,000 scholarship.
The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is open to women of any age enrolled in at least the second year of an undergraduate program through the final year of a Master’s program in business. The 2020 recipient is UH-Hilo student Lindsay Emerson, who received a $3,000 scholarship.
Kamimura and Smith, the top winners in their categories, will advance compete for additional awards and scholarships at the district and international levels of Zonta.
